Calibration curves are presented for deriving approximate magnitudes
from the ESO R and SERC J survey film copies. The importance of a
detailed description of how and where the star images are measured is
underlined. As a by-product, we determined the average limiting
magnitude for ESO R as 21.5 m, and for SERC J as 22.4 m.
