Warped neutral hydrogen disks that do not seem to be explainable by tidal interaction with other galaxies have recently been reported for three out of five nearly edge-on spiral galaxies. This paper proposes that illusionary warps in 21-cm observations of otherwise normal galaxies can be created by a nearly edge-on orientation and by the existence of H I spiral arms in the outer parts of the disks. It is also shown that illusionary warping in radio observations can be accentuated by a beamwidth mechanism analogous to the optical Stock (1955) effect, whereby the outward continuation of the spiral arms as they cross the major axis creates the illusion of a bend in that axis. Examples of the Stock effect in two warped edge-on isolated galaxies are examined along with a computer simulation of an illusionary warp produced by the Stock effect in a nearly edge-on galaxy.
