A number of ill-posed inverse problems of astrophysics are examined in an effort to show how the nature and evolution of various astrophysical objects can be studied on the basis of the mathematical analysis of observational data. Particular attention is given to ill-posed problems involving Wolf-Rayet stars in close binary systems, X-ray binaries, black-hole candidates, and accretion disks in novae.
