The possibility that the sun has a companion in the form of a black hole or neutron star is investigated through an analysis of the luminosity achieved through accretion. By considering the case of a close encounter between the sun and its postulated temporary companion, constraints on the allowed mass range and radiation mechanisms are obtained. If an encounter with a black hole or neutron star is in progress, it could be possible to observe the gravitational lens effect.
