A model is presented which can account, proceeding from the assumption that the Martian northern ice cap is thick enough to flow in a way analogous to terrestrial ice sheets, for the origin, movement, and spiral character of Mars' scarp/trough complexes. The model also explains such reentrant valleys as the Chasma Boreale, and even the layered terrain. An additional model is developed which relates accumulation and ablation to ice flow and scarp velocities as well as the particle paths within the ice cap.
