A significant fraction of flat spectrum quasars and BL Lac objects exhibit rapid variability both in total intensity as well as polarization at cm wavelengths, on time scales ranging from a few hrs. to a few days, a phenomenon termed IntraDay Variability (IDV). The physical process responsible for this behavior is not well understood, though various models ranging from source-intrinsic (e.g. shock-in-jet) to source-extrinsic (e.g. scintillation due to electron density fluctuations in ISM) have been invoked to explain the same. Absence of multi-epoch, multi-wavelength data (especially in the 2cm range) exacerbates the situation. Hence, 15GHz, full polarization, multi-epoch VLBA data obtained as part of the MOJAVE campaign, was studied to identify possible IDV candidates.
The flat spectrum, HPRQ 4C 29.45 (J1159+2914, z=0.729) has been found to exhibit Type II (variability time scale 0.5 - 2 days) IDV. In the current study, 2cm multi-epoch data pertaining to this object are presented, along with a discussion of its variability characteristics, especially the presence of `seasonal IDV’ confirming a source-extrinsic contribution. 4C29.45 was also studied at other wavelengths (e.g. 7mm) using VLBA data obtained from the NRAO archive and results from the same are also presented.
