After a historical account of the identification and redshift-determination of extragalactic radio sources, attention is given to some of the products of recent work on the identification of radio sources at optical and IR wavelengths, as well as to the problems posed by the measurement of their redshifts and spectra. The present status of optical identification programs for bright extragalactic radio sources is assessed in view of the 3CR complete sample and 2.7-GHz all-sky survey. Also noted are the results of deep radio surveys, the 1 Jy survey's IR and optical observations, and the astrophysical significance of these surveys' results.
