The large area (~50 deg2), daily cadence, and sensitive image differencing (mAB<24.5) of the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) Medium Deep Survey (MDS) has the potential to detect optical flares from the tidal disruption of stars by dormant supermassive black holes in the nuclei of distant galaxies. Based on the successful detection of tidal disruption flare candidates in the UV and optical in 2.9 deg2 of the GALEX and CFHTLS Deep Imaging Surveys, we expect the PS1 MDS to detect 15 events yr-1. The identification of these events will be possible using the shape and colors of their light curves, after efficient filtering out of more common variable sources such as supernovae coincident with galaxy nuclei and ongoing AGN variability. Follow-up spectroscopy will be necessary to confirm inactive galaxy hosts, and follow-up UV/X-ray observations will make it possible to determine the bolometric luminosity of the events and their characteristic temperature, which in combination with the shape of the light curve can probe the type of star disrupted, and most importantly, the mass and spin of the central black hole.
