The amplitude spectrum of the solar oscillations shows a well defined pattern of peaks, making the identification of the individual oscillation modes easy. Similar patterns are expected from solar type stars. In contrast the spectra of delta Scuti stars show no regularities on any scale. Fast rotation which causes splitting of degenerate modes is only part of the explanation. A much greater complication is the fact that only a tiny fraction of the possible modes are excited. The cause of this selection is not known. There is a way to identify the degree of a mode via the wavelength dependence of limb darkening, either through spectral lines or through broad band filters. Both approaches are discussed in the context of the MONS mission.
