Consideration is given to methods of identifying and characterizing noncompressive density enhancements (NCDES) in the quiet-time solar wind on the basis of measurements of geomagnetic pulsations. The increase in solar wind density at low plasma temperature, negative velocity gradient and a low magnetic field occurring approximately two days before a sector crossing characteristic of a NCDE is found to correspond to a sharp drop in the intensity of stable Pc3-4 pulsations, the appearance of a characteristic mixed regime of low-amplitude pulsations, and a sharp increase in the variability index of the regime in the geomagnetic record. Using these indications, it is possible to identify NCDEs in the geomagnetic record and to investigate such characteristics as the degree of irregularity in field magnitude and direction in separate NCDEs, and to serve as an indicator of subsequent high-velocity solar wind streams.
