An attempt is made to identify the interstellar X-ogen line at 89.19 GHz by improving vacuum-chemical results for the geometrical structure of the HCO(+) molecular ion. The energy hypersurface in the minimum region is determined for HCO(+) and HCN by using the self-consistent-field and configuration-interaction approaches. Molecular force constants through fourth order are obtained from a polynomial fit of the ab initio energy hypersurfaces, and the rotational as well as the rotation-vibration constants of the two species are reevaluated. The resulting rotational-transition frequencies are found to reproduce the isotopic HCN lines quite well and to match the X-ogen line exactly. Based on this analysis, the interstellar X-ogen line at 89.19 GHZ is identified as the lowest rotational transition (J l - 0) of the HCO(+) molecular ion.
