It is shown that a mean 2.5-15 micrometers spectrum, computed on the basis of infrared transmittance spectra measurements is remarkably close to that required to explain a wide range of astronomical data, except for two significant points of departure. Transmittance spectra for four polysaccharides were obtained as a basis for the interpretation of the spectra of the galactic infrared sources. The similarity between a suitably normalized laboratory transmittance spectrum for propene and the data for the interstellar matter leads to the conclusion that the latter is propene-similar matter which is apparently closely associated with interstellar polysaccharides.
