Mariner 10 pictures showed that the classical albedo features on Mercury did not generally represent major geological provinces, so that a new nomenclature system was required for topographic and geological studies. The paper outlines the proposed new IAU nomenclature for topographic features on Mercury as uncovered by Mariner 10. The nomenclature concerns six major classes of topographic features that require names: plains, mountains, valleys, ridges, scarps, and craters. The proposed names are chosen among foreign words for Mercury (either planet or god), astronomers intimately associated with studies of Mercury, and great human contributors to arts and humanities. The names will represent final official IAU nomenclature upon ratification by the General Assembly.
