A mid-sized icy satellite of Saturn, discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1671. It is 1440 km in diameter, and orbits at a distance of 3 561 000 km. Iapetus is unique in the solar system in its harlequin appearance: the leading hemisphere—facing the direction of orbital motion—is dark, with an albedo of around 0.05, while the trailing hemisphere is bright, with an albedo of 0.5.
