Hyperfine structure measurements are performed on Sc II with the collinear laser-ion technique. The three metastable levels in the 3d2 configuration and the five levels in the 3d4p configuration are investigated, and the hyperfine structure constants A and B for the eight levels are determined. Results are compared with the theoretical hyperfine structure predicted by the method given by Edmunds (1973), and it is concluded that any stellar abundance analysis based on theoretical hyperfine structure derived as outlined by Edmunds will remain uncertain until experimental spectra are available.
