It is demonstrated that the presence of a non-Newtonian medium-range force would introduce large uncertainties in the evaluation of the Eotvos torsion-balance experiments, and that a new analysis of the results may make them compatible with recent geophysical data predictions and the hypercharge hypothesis (Fischbach et al., 1986). The Eotvos result residual nonzero effects are around 16 times larger than, but still correlated to, the present results, and it is suggested that they could be mainly due to terrain irregularities. A new Eotvos-type experiment to test existence, strength, and range of hypercharge fields is proposed.
