Deep grabens, some 90 m in depth, occur on the crest of the East Pacific Rise, between 17.9° and 18.6°S and between 21.1° and 21.7°S and are found within the topographic highs in these regions along the rise axis. These axial valleys mark areas of recent faulting and intensive hydrothermal activity which is associated with the formation of metalliferous sediments and of massive sulphides of iron, copper and zinc. Most iron and manganese released from the ore fluids continues to be deposited outside the grabens, preferentially on the western flank of the rise; a tendency which can be recognised also in older sediments of this area.
