A generalized dispersion relation which describes stability characteristics is developed for a gravitationally unstable, infinite cylinder of self-gravitating, perfectly conducting and compressible fluid which is subjected to a uniform axial magnetic field. The gravitational instability of the cylinder is found to worsten in the presence of the fluid's compressibility effects. The method differs from that employed by Chandrasekhar (1961) for the case of the solenoidal velocity field prevalent in an incompressible fluid.
