It is demonstrated that both 'fast' and 'slow' planetary-scale hydromagnetic gradient waves may exist in the dynamo region of the ionosphere due to the inhomogeneity of the geomagnetic field with latitude. Large changes (by almost an order of magnitude) in the phase velocities and period of the 'fast' waves for the daytime and the nighttime ionosphere and also the direct connection between the waves and perturbations of the geomagnetic field provide a way for the experimental detection of these waves through a simultaneous analysis of the variation of ionospheric parameters in the E layer and geomagnetic field components.
