A series of observations of the radio emission from atomic hydrogen in the spiral arms of the Galaxy and the neighbouring Magellanic Clouds has been conducted using relatively-simple observing equipment. Accurate measurements of the intensity and Doppler shift of this emission with respect to the hydrogen line rest frequency were made at a number of galactic longitudes. From these observations, the relative velocity of the regions under observation with respect to Earth and the local standard of rest could be determined. Some interesting conclusions could be drawn about the structure and velocity distribution of hydrogen within the Galaxy.
