A detailed laboratory study of hydrogen isotopes in deuterium-rich meteorites is described. Three specific problems will be examined. The first problem is to establish the nature (organic or inorganic) of the deuterium-rich phase. The second problem is to evaluate the isotopic composition of the deuterium-rich component, free of any addition of terrestrial or indigeneous light hydrogen. The third problem is related to the second. The distribution of deuterium within a single meteorite seems to be variable at a small scale. By determining the δD of the deuterium-rich component(s), the authors tried to determine whether these variations are indigeneous to the meteorite or due to differences in the intensity of terrestrial contamination.
