Application of electromagnetic hybrid simulations (kinetic ions, fluid electrons) to studies of heliospheric shocks is discussed. Recent work on the macrostructure of collisionless shocks suggests that due to ion kinetic processes and properties of the reflected gyrating ions a new structure for quasi-perpendicular shocks can form. As a result, as much as 25% of the shock surface may be replaced by this new structure called ``solitary shock''. In contrast to regular quasi-perpendicular shocks, solitary shocks are associated with smaller density and magnetic field compressions and a considerably more turbulent downstream state. Here we discuss two methods of shock formation relevant to general heliospheric shock studies. Focus is on the question of whether parts of the heliospheric bow shock and termination shock correspond to solitary shock solutions. The preliminary results indicate an affirmative answer.
