In order to extend the application domain of gas generation, SME PyroAlliance has developed a new technology based on the dissociation of the active principles, i.e. the oxidizer and the fuel. This technology presents some advantages that enable a substantial reduction in weight and volume as compared to cold gas system or standard pyrotechnic devices. In addition, the simplicity of the space platforms is improved. The main advantages of this technology are: - When the system is inactive, it is not considered to be a standard energetic object (i.e. pyrotechnic). This reduces the operational constraints. - The extremely high safety of the device during operation - The possibility to control the exhaust products through a careful selection of oxidizer, fuel and mixture ratio - The possibility to introduce an active control system in order to provide a tailored gas generation (thrust control, pressure limitation,...) - The possibility to extinguish and re-ignite the gas generator. The following work presents the technology, the main applications that PyroAlliance is currently studying, and the state of the art of gas generator design.
