The current knowledge of the origin and evolution of comets is briefly reviewed, starting with a historical background. In particular, attention is given to two theories about the place of comets in the solar system, propounded by Oort (1950) and Kuiper (1951), respectively. The discussion then focuses on the work of Tremaine et al. (1988), who proved the validity of the double track theory of the evolution of comets through an analysis of the orbits of short-period comets. The possibilities of seeing comets in the Kuiper Belt are examined with particular reference to occultation astronomy, diffraction and lensing, multiple telescope robotic observations, and observations of gravitational lens interference.
