STIS is a versatile instrument that supports several observational modes -- imaging, first order and echelle spectroscopy, and a wide spectral range covering from the NUV to the NIR part of the spectrum. In order to maximize the scientific return of the STIS observations, numerous calibration programs have been carried out on orbit. These calibrations are used to create new and better reference files that enhance, when necessary, the reference files produced on the ground and maintain the quality of the data and the productivity of STIS. Here we describe the history of the STIS calibration program as well as the reference file testing tool developed to assure the scientific accuracy of the reference files.
