High resolution emission-line images of two unusually luminousextragalactic supernova remnants in the galaxies NGC 4449 andNGC 6946 are requested. The observed X-ray and optical fluxesfor these two remnants rank them as the brightest known SNRs.They differ by roughly a factor of 10 in age and expansionvelocity, and the large luminosities of both are attributableat least in part to interactions with relatively denseinterstellar surroundings. HST images will permit accurateangular size measurements which, when combined with expansionvelocity information already in hand, will place hardconstraints on the sizes and ages of each object. Continuumimages will be used to resolve questions regarding the localenvironment around each object and permit us to access themake-up of the stellar populations in the local vicinity, constraining the mass of the precursor stars. In addition tothe image data, we request FOS far--UV (G160L)spectra of the NGC 4449 SNR to complete the spectroscopy ofthis object begun in an FOS GTO program. A UV spectrum willpermit an estimate of the carbon abundance, which will place ahard constraint on the precursor's mass.
