Faint Object Camera (FOC) images of hydrogen-poor gas in the planetary nebulae A30 and A78 have revealed remarkable ``cometary'' structures in the [O III] lambda 5007 line. Almost all the hydrogen-poor emission near the central star of A78 is resolved into compact knots, with diameters in the range 0.1"5 -- 0.5". These knots have linear "tails" several arcsec in length pointing directly away from the central star. In addition to these cometary structures, which appear to be distributed in an equatorial plane, there is also more diffuse emission in the direction perpendicular to this plane. One of the diffuse features corresponds to one of the fast (100 km/s) "bullets" reported by Clegg et al. (IAU Symposium 155, 1992). Because the central stars of A30 and A78 are known to have energetic stellar winds, we ascribe the observed knot morphology to the interaction of stellar winds with dense knots of hydrogen-poor gas. Our high-resolution FOC images provide an unprecedented amount of detailed information on this interaction process. We discuss the implications of these qualitatively new data upon our understanding of the dynamical interaction of tenuous, fast stellar winds with much denser gaseous condensations. We also discuss the global dynamics of A30 and A78 in view of these new findings.
