A review is presented of ongoing investigations to identify black holes, the collapsed remains of long-dead stars. The reports of a recent conference described a new set of identification criteria, based on a peculiar pattern of X-ray emissions, which seems to distinguish possible black holes from other more ordinary types. Using these new criteria, a convincing black hole candidate identified as V404 Cygni, is said to have a mass at least six times the mass of the sun (twice the black hole requirement). Attention is given to additional criteria and other black hole candidates under consideration.
