This paper examines observational and theoretical evidence for the occurrence of galaxy mergers. Consideration is given to possible problems in Toomre's (1977) scenario for the formation of elliptical galaxies and the bulges of spirals by merging galactic disks. The possibility that the Galaxy formed by mergers and the possible mechanisms for the formation of elliptical galaxies and globular clusters are discussed.
