A five-dimensional theory with interpretation in four-dimensional space-time is considered. The field equations are derived from a variational principle proposed by Tonnelat, and the theory depends on a parameter p. Horizons are studied as a function of p in the absence of electromagnetic fields. Exact external solutions of the field equations are obtained for the static case with spherical symmetry. A solution similar to Schwarzschild's solution is found, where horizons are Schwarzschild's horizons. The trajectories of neutral mass points in the field of Schwarzschild's solution do not appear as the limit of trajectories when the scalar field becomes nearly constant. Newtonian approximation of the field equations is discussed.
