A historical perspective regarding holography and its application to acoustic imaging is presented and the principles of holography are examined, taking into account the Gabor on-axis hologram, the Leith and Upatnicks' off-axis hologram, and holography in the acoustic domain and the reconstruction problem. Holography by linear detection is considered along with applications of optical holography, applications of acoustic holography, aspects of system concept and embodiment, holography in seismic imaging, and holography in underwater imaging
