The status of theory and observation of coronal holes is reviewed. The 1970 eclipse and the 1973-1974 Skylab observations are noted as landmarks in observations of nonpolar coronal holes (in X-rays and UV included). Correlations between coronal holes and high-speed corpuscular streams in the solar wind and the consistent appearance of coronal holes following the emergence of bipolar spot groups are discussed. Terrestrial effects, in the form of recurrent magnetic storms (perturbations of the geomagnetic field), are noted. Important research topics are highlighted: the possible openness and unipolarity of the magnetic fields associated with the holes and the origins of these fields, holes as possibly images of unipolar fields, possible existence of mini-holes, occurrences and variability of coronal holes at sunspot maxima and minima, the uniformity of the solar wind, and patterns of evolution of closed and open magnetic fields in spot groups.
