This note reports the results of a new type of analysis applied to detect periodicities associated with the polar motion of the Earth. This method combines zero crossing counts with linear filtering to suggest a few good points in the spectral support at which the periodogram is evaluated. These points are selected by the sequence of higher order crossings commonly referred to as HOC. HOC are zero crossing counts observed in filtered series where the filtering consists mostly of simple repeated differencing, repeated summation and other lowpass filters. The application of HOC analysis in the detection of hidden periodicities has been discussed using both real and simulated data showing that this method is capable of fine detection of sinusoidal components buried in noise.
