The on-orbit calibration of the 290 mm diameter, 1400 mm focal length, all-reflective Schmidt telescope on Hipparcos is described. Hipparcos is a proposed space astrometry satellite that is to measure positions, proper motions, and parallaxes of 100,000 preselected stars with an accuracy of 2 marcsec for positions and parallaxes and 2 marcsec/yr for proper motions and is also to provide data for an attitude-measurement system. The calibration operation is composed of geometric and photometric tasks. The procedures for the geometric task, which requires determining field-to-grid transformations of the telescope, and for the photometric task, which involves studying the relationship between instrument output and incoming photon flux, are discussed, and the necessary equations are provided.
