The observation of cosmic ray air showers above 10^20 eV poses two serious challenges for particle astrophysics: how the primary particles are accelerated to these fantastic energies, and how the primaries evade energy loss while crossing a Universe filled with radiation. The data will be reviewed. Then some novel solutions to these acceleration and propagation problems will be explored.
