An optical spectrum of the Type Ia supernova 1984a in NGC 4419, obtained shortly before maximum light by Wegner and McMahan (1987), shows definite differences from the maximum-light spectrum of the well-observed Type Ia supernova 1981b in NGC 4536. Synthetic-spectrum calculations are used to infer that the velocity at the photosphere was 4300 km/s higher in SN 1984a than in SN 1981b. The spectrum of SN 1984a shows evidence for some matter moving as fast as 35,000 km/s. The Wegner-McMahan spectrum settles the long-debated question of whether the intrinsic properties of all Type Ia supernovae are practically identical - they are not. Some of the implications of the heterogeneity for empirical and theoretical studies of Type Ia supernovae are briefly discussed.
