We present Mars zonal wind measurements by means of infrared heterodyne spectroscopy of CO2 features at 959.3917 cm-1. Observations were carried out using the Cologne Tuneable Heterodyne Infrared Spectrometer (THIS) from December 2nd-8th 2005 shortly after Mars opposition at the McMath-Pierce solar telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona. The spatial resolution was 2” on a 16” martian disk. Mars was observed at six different latitudes close to the west (dayside) limb and zonal winds were retrieved from Dopplershifts between CO2 non-thermal emission from the mesosphere and absorption features from low atmospheric regions. The season on Mars was late northern winter (LS 335°). We retrieved retrograde winds in the northern hemisphere that were particularly strong in the equatorial region and prograde winds at high southern latitudes. First comparison to wind values from the LMD model in the Mars Climate Database show general qualitative agreement between observations and model.
In addition, the non-LTE features show substantial gain narrowing which makes them narrower than expected from kinetic temperatures. This effect prohibits their use as temperature probes for the altitude of the emission forming region but might proof interesting in evaluating non-LTE models.
