The Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) is the third in the series of great observatories in the NASA programme after the Hubble Space Telescope and the Gamma Ray Observatory, and will be launched in a highly eccentric orbit, in 1998. The AXAF payload contains a Wolter-type I high resolution mirror assembly (HRMA) two insertable grating systems, the high energy transmission grating (HETG) and the low energy transmission grating (LETG) and two imaging detector systems. The LETG is being developed in a collaborative effort between SRON and MPE.
