The prospects for studying the X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies with the ESA observatory XMM are discussed. The improvement in sensitivity and spectral resolution of a factor of 10 to 100 means that detailed knowledge of the temperature and chemical abundance profiles can be obtained, an essential issue for further investigation of the cool X-ray components. High resolution Bragg spectroscopy resolves the Fe line at 6.7 keV and the kinematics of the X-ray gas can be studied in detail. For clusters of galaxies at z = 1, the medium resolution detectors provide information on temperature, abundances, and an estimate of the redshift. By combining the spectral data with direct imaging of the clusters, insight into cluster formation and evolution can be achieved. The optimal spatial resolution for these investigations are also discussed. It is shown that ROSAT, XMM and AXAF (NASA) complement each other in the study of clusters of galaxies.
