We propose to use HETG spectroscopy to diagnose the bulk motions and the temperature and density distributions in the hot plasma on the nearby early-type star beta Cru. We will use these data to constrain our models of hot-star X-ray production: the intrinsic wind shock (IWS) model as well as the magnetically confined wind shock (MCWS) model. Beta Cru is the brightest normal hot star not already observed with Chandra, and will provide a high signal-to-noise HETG spectrum. We will make detailed comparisons with the HETG data from the several other hot stars observed with this instrument. Comparisons with the anomalous star, tau Sco, which is of a very similar spectral type to beta Cru will be especially illuminating.
