In this contribution we will present X-ray spectroscopic data of the warm absorbers present in Active Galactic Nuclei. We will show that high resolution X-ray spectra of nearby Seyferts can be modelled by a simple 2 or 3 phase photoionized wind, with the phases often appearing in pressure balance. We argue that this outflow, responsible for the complex X-ray and UV absorption in more than half of the Seyfert 1 galaxies, seems to be an ubiquitous characteristic of AGN, and we will analize the physical conditions needed for this multi-phase wind to exist. Finally, we will discuss the possible geometrical scenarios compatible with the X-ray and UV observations, as well as the connection of this wind with other components present in the nuclear environment of AGN.
