The land surface temperature (LST) is an important but highly variable climatological parameter. Its spatial distribution and the characteristic of its diurnal change over wide areas can only be determined with remote sensing methods. Existing and past satellites allow to examine the LST climatology from IR measurements for some decades. But there is no single satellite system available to produce IR datasets with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution to meet the requirements of LST-investigations. Thus, a combined IR dataset is calculated from NOAA/AVHRR- and METEOSAT-measurements. The algorithm presented, includes intercalibration, precise navigation, and collocation of both datasets. The result is an IR dataset with the temporal resolution of METEOSAT and a spatial resolution of about 2.5 km. The algorithm to determine the atmospheric correction for a single IR channel at a radiosonde location is based on the radiative transfer code LOWTRAN-7. It takes into account the actual viewing angle, the dependency of the atmospheric correction on different LSTs, and surface elevations. The algorithm for spatial interpolation of the parameters of the atmospheric correction allows simple application to all pixel in an area surrounded by radiosonde stations.
