Supershells have long been thought to trigger the formation of molecular clouds and stars. However, the mechanisms and relative importance of this process in the Galactic ecosystem are still poorly understood. This project is a detailed study of the `Carina Flare', a rare example of an HI-H2 Galactic chimney. In low resolution Parkes SGPS data, it appears as a moderately sized (~250x300pc), gently expanding (vexp ~10km/s) HI supershell, which shows strong evidence of Galactic Plane blowout. Unbiased NANTEN 12CO(J=1-0) observations reveal an extensive, co-moving molecular cloud complex, extending to five times the molecular gas scale height, with active intermediate mass star formation confirmed in two clouds. We propose to image the HI associated with the Carina Flare to an angular resolution of 2', obtaining some of the highest resolution images of any known supershell. Utilizing both the atomic and molecular datasets, and comparing with existing Halpha survey data, we will study instabilities in the shell, seeking to discriminate between differing models of fragmentation and cloud formation, and investigate the influence of the supershell on the evolution of the cold, warm and ionized phases of the ISM.
