It has recently been demonstrated that palaeomagnetic studies of reversals may contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of the geodynamo. A description is presented of the results obtained in the study of a reversal recorded in a sequence of Tortonian marine clays near the village of Skouloudhiana in the Khania province of western Crete, taking into account the upper reversal in Skouloudhiana. About 100 additional transitional palaeomagnetic directions have been obtained, and the results have been analyzed with suitable mathematical techniques. Attention is given to geological setting and sampling, sedimentology and magnetic mineralogy, and details regarding the transitional palaeomagnetic directions. It is pointed out that the high time-resolution of this record, which is less than a few hundred years, has made it possible to observe some detailed characteristics of the transitional field.
