An echelle spectrograph has been used to conduct a long-term program of the lunar sodium atmosphere, and this has yielded spectra for different periods of the year and lunar phases as well as for different latitudes. The slit was placed parallel to the lunar equator at the east and west sides, and perpendicular to the equator at the north and south sides. The data thus obtained point to a micrometeorite impact mechanism of atmosphere generation.
