In 2008 Cassini is making four targeted flybys of Enceladus, all of which include close views of the active south polar region. During the March 2008 flyby the Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) instrument obtained its most detailed observations so far of the thermal radiation from the active "tiger stripe” fractures. 7 - 16 micron mapping of the fractures with 6 km resolution showed warm temperatures along the full length of the fractures, though with large variations in intensity. Best-fit graybody temperatures for the warmest regions, along Damascus Sulcus, are about 200 K, over an area equivalent to a linear warm region about 20 meters wide along the tiger stripes. CIRS also obtained the first observations of the endogenic thermal emission in the 16 - 100 micron region, which should provide improved estimates of total heat flow by including contributions from regions too cool to radiate significantly at shorter wavelengths. Many observations are obtained in Saturn eclipse, enhancing the ability to separate passive and endogenic contributions to the thermal flux. Upcoming Enceladus flybys on August 11th, October 9th, and October 31st will provide much additional CIRS data, with best spatial resolution approaching 1 km.
