Observations are presented of interstellar Na D and K I profiles towards 16 stars in the globular cluster M4. Two strong, low-velocity components are detected, at velocities of approx. = -5 km/s and approx. = +3 km/s. A weaker component at approx. = +20 km/s is detected towards most of the stars in the Na I data. All of these components show considerable variations in strength across the cluster, and the closest pair of stars observed reveal variations in structure in the Interstellar Medium (ISM) on a scale of approx. 0.01 pc. We identify the +3 km/s component with diffuse gas associated with the nearby rho Ophiuchi dark cloud. The -5 km/s component may be associated with an expanding shell around a subgroup of the Sco-Cen association, and is located at less than 150 pc. This component shows large variations in strength and velocity across the cluster. The K I line strengths suggest a more complex variation in the reddening across the cluster than that previously reported.
