Since their detection brown dwarfs have always been of special interest, but the absence of a clear mass-luminosity relation makes it hard to determine their physical properties and to test theories of formation processes, inner structure and atmospheres. Spatially resolved brown dwarf binaries provide the unique opportunity to determine the dynamical masses of the binary components independently from theoretical models.
We now present high-resolution multi-epoch ESO/VLT NGS and LGS AO observations of the orbital motion of the benchmark brown dwarf binary Kelu1 AB. The observations are part of our astrometric monitoring program of binary brown dwarfs with relatively short orbital periods. We carry out fitting of the orbital parameters for Kelu1 AB and derive a first dynamical mass estimate of the binary. In addition we present the first spatially resolved L-band photometry existing for any L dwarf binary, as well as H- and K-band spectra, which provide the most reliable way for spectral classification in the NIR.
These results will help to improve the understanding of the physical parameters of brown dwarfs, to adjust the theory of their evolution and to improve the interpretation of the observations of brown dwarfs.
