A brief history of the application of lasers to high-resolution optical spectroscopy is given. A technical description of the laser systems used in spectroscopic analysis of atomic systems is presented, and some applications to frequency measurement and detection methods are discussed. Consideration is also given to: laser techniques for Doppler-free high-resolution optical spectroscopy; Doppler-free multiphoton spectroscopy; saturation techniques; and laser cooling of atoms and ions. Some possible future applications of lasers to atomic spectroscopy are also discussed.
