The z>4.5 quasars are our only large sample of objects at these high redshifts. Ground-based and WFPC2 studies have shown that they mark rich regions in which neighboring galaxies, gas and dust can be detected around the quasars, together with more separated galaxies. The latter objects appear to be very primitive and may represent early stages in the galaxy formation process. Fainter companions and surrounding galaxies may be found with combined deep IR and optical imaging from HST. Here we propose deep imaging observations with NICMOS of four z >~ 4.5 quasar fields. These have been the subject of an intensive program of ground-based LyAlpha, O II, and multi-color imaging and spectroscopic investigations. The observations are designed to produce a homogeneous data base around the highest redshift quasars which will be usable for a wide variety of studies. Because of this we will make the data available for archival research after only a 3-month proprietary period.
